6 Flagstaff Terrace, Devonport, North Shore City 0624, Auckland, New Zealand
This magnificently restored, grand Victorian villa, with its foundations solidly planted in the 19th century, actually resonates the foundation of Devonport itself. You see, Devonport was originally named Flagstaff, after the signalling station set up on Mt Victoria in 1841, and it was only renamed Devonport in 1868. As well as that, and directly across the road, Windsor Reserve is also known as Flagstaff, because it was here that the British navy landed and began European settlement of Devonport in 1840.
This gracious home, then, is so much more than just a period property. Built in 1888, and still going strong, the house is of solid kauri construction, with an authentic Marella Italian tiled roof. Inside, leaded-light and stained-glass feature windows cast beautiful colours in many rooms and the hallway. High-studded ceilings have chandeliers and glass lamps dangling above polished kauri floors, and the staircase in the main hall is elegance itself.
The house was once home to one of Devonport’s first doctors. These days it would make a home that offers a very special buyer no less than eight bedrooms, with eight ensuites, a cosy Victorian parlour with working open fireplace and a stunningly light and airy large dining area overlooking the courtyard at the back. Open to the dining room is a superb kitchen with solid macrocarpa work tops which add to the colonial style of the whole building.
However you choose to live here, this three-storey historic house is surrounded by lush tropical gardens front and back, with majestic palms and verdant succulents. Best of all, it is situated in a superb waterfront location right in the heart of the village. Yet you’d hardly believe it’s across the road from the new library and shops. Inside, it’s quieter than a shy Victorian lady’s tea party. Sit out on the front balcony or in the front garden though, close your eyes and just imagine the brass band playing on the bandstand in the reserve. 6 Flagstaff Terrace is in a world and a class of its own.
